Images: whole outfit The skirt was patterned based on the instructions in this video. Once I had decided to do horizontal tiers I knew it was going to be hard to line up the vertical stripes so I decided to ignore them completely. The idea for doing it in patchwork was thence produced fully formed in my mind like Athena from the temple of Zeus. Obviously this is completely inaccurate but it feels inexplicably appropriate -- I imagine this is because I had a lot of patchwork clothing as a child, so it reads as cutesy and childish to me, and the sense of this whole part of the comic is infantile regression anyhow.
^ THE ABOVE TEXT WAS WRITTEN BY A LIAR. SKIPPING TO THE PART OF YOUR QUEST WHERE EVERYTHING IS ALREADY DONE AND YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. IS FUCKING AWESOME.
Images: patchwork The fabric for the patchwork comprises: two pillowcases (op shop), two singlets (op shop), the legs of a jumpsuit (op shop; the top was saved), fabric scraps from when clothing was made for me as a child (easily >fifteen years old), quilting cotton from a secondhand fabric shop. The top was from Target or somewhere and I just unpicked the original sleeves and drew a pattern from them. Winged the armbands... They serve their purpose but one of the sleeves is heavier than the other (because the fabric weights were so random) and dips down to hide the armband in all of the photos I have. Very embarrassing!!!!
Images: sleeves, cupcake The "body"(?) of the cupcake is also the last of the patchwork fabric because it looks to be the same yellow as Jane's dress, and then the rest is felt. I stole the pattern linked in this video but disregarded all the instructions... Sorry, that person...
The sewing is the part I think is actually interesting so I will be much briefer down here! The wig is the cheapest one I could find because I do not know how to style them and did not wish to destroy something expensive. I sewed the cupcake to the ???? mesh part ??? What is that? Anyway it has since not fallen off by which I am tremendously impressed. I bought cheap tights and tortured them with cheap fabric paint and I do not want to talk about that. As a matter of fact do not even look at them. The lollipop is styrofoam and cardboard and a lot of glue ...Weirdly so many compliments on this! I think seeing a giant lollipop is just naturally a really exciting experience. Likely ancestral memories of fairy times. Last of all (a few days before the convention) I had a friend over and we sat on the floor making jewelry. No good pictures of these, but one of the bracelets has letters reading "PEACHY" and another is in the Alpha kid colours (I traded this away at the convention for one which says "KITTY"). One of my earrings is another lollipop and there are naturally a lot of little charms which say "SWEET" (remember your history). Images: tights? wig, lollipop, jewellery
I had a lot of fun throughout the process and a lot of fun wearing it on the day (& likely shall again) and my twelve year old self would have thought it was cool, which was the main idea. Images: con day
(Also, I haven't linked this on the main costume page, so it is kind of like a secret just for he who hath read this entire thing, but a few months prior I made a Dirk costume as well. Link to this page when I make it)
